3 REASONS WHY YOU AREN’T WHERE YOU WANT TO BE FINANCIALLY IN YOUR COACHING OR CONSULTING BIZ

I took an interesting journey back in time this morning, when I read my journal from 2014. It was just before I gave birth to my daughter. At that stage in my life, I was in planning mode. I had no intention of being a full time Mom. I respect full time Mom’s, however, that life is not for me. I’m too ambitious, too driven and have too much desire to make a big difference on this planet.

It’s those attributes that drove me to become a coach. Even back then, I was talking about potential and performance. I had a deep calling to help people overcome their limitations and fulfill on their dreams for their lives.

I was deeply motivated to follow my passion and make a real difference in the world. However, another huge motivator for me was freedom. The theme of my life has always been freedom. And an integral part of that is financial freedom.

I have spoken to a lot of coaches and consultants recently and they share the same dreams as me. To make real a difference while crushing it financially. Yet, the average income of a coach is around $30-40k per year. People like you and me are giving up high paying corporate jobs and landing firmly in the reality of entrepreneurship. No salary safety-net and the need for a lot of consistent commitment to rise above average.

Am I where I want to be financially? No. So, that’s why I’ve pressed pause to examine the potential explanations for why coaches and consultants are so challenged financially. These are my TOP 3 REASONS:

1. YOU’RE LACKING FAITH 

I was talking to my own coach and she asked me a very poignant question. She asked me if I could be doing anything more in my business that would make a difference financially? When I sat back and took a look, the answer was no. I’m on court, I’m committed, I’m taking daily action and I’m constantly refining, measuring, tweaking and growing.

So, you guessed it! Her next question was, “well, where’s the faith?”. Great question! There is always a tipping point and if you do the work consistently, take aligned action and constantly refine what you are doing – at some point you are going to reap the rewards from your efforts.

Stay the course, my friends! If you’ve planted seeds and you’re constantly nurturing them, they will grow.

2. YOUR STARTING POINT IS NOT CLEAR

This was my problem when I first launched my coaching business. My end game and my vision weren’t clear. My target audience wasn’t clear. My communications weren’t clear. In fact, nothing was clear!

A lack of clarity is one of the greatest barriers to financial success, because if you don’t know who you are, why you do what you do, who you ultimately want to work with and what problems you solve for them – then, everything you do becomes ad-hoc and inconsistent.

Laser focus wins the game and laser focus comes from absolute clarity about your end game. The who, what, where and why of your business.

3. YOU AREN’T WILLING TO SIGNIFICANTLY INVEST IN YOURSELF 

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Every coach and consultant needs a coach, consultant, mentor or trainer. Why would a prospective client be willing to invest in you, if you’re not willing to invest in yourself?
